Laisenia Qarase.

The name talked about everywhere in this country today. Former prime minister of Fiji, father, husband, leader, mentor and much more. This man made an impact in this nation that many feel today, few knew behind the scenes, and only one ever established before he was even born.

I never met this powerhouse of a Fijian man. I’ve never heard any of his well renowned speeches in person. But reading all these different tributes I wish I had. His wife celebrating his life. Individuals from different backgrounds, different lifestyles, different religions, different walks of life all sharing the same token of gratitude, sharing in the mourning of one of the greatest sons of Fiji. It’s amazing.

I simply read in awe. Words, typed mostly, expressing deep condolences but mostly appreciation, sharing lighthearted moments with great sorrow, depicting a man of order, a man with great ethical and moral grounding, a man who feared God and respected others around him who may not know his God, a family man, a kind soul. This is what I gather from this name, Laisenia Qarase.

Serve with honor. Lead by servitude. Work in excellence. Nanuma na wekamu. Fear God.

These are the lessons I learn from a great leader that Fiji bids farewell to today.
